چکیده

A two-stage embossing technique for fabricating microchannels for microfluidic devices is presented. A micromachined aluminum mold is used o emboss a polyetherimide (PEI) substrate with a relatively high glass transition temperature (T ). The embossed PEI is then used as a mold for g mbossing an amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET) substrate with a lower Tg. The resulting APET substrate has the same features as hose of the aluminum mold. Successful transfer of features from the aluminum mold to the APET substrate was verified by profilometry, and an pplication of this method in production of a microfluidic device is presented. 2008 Elsevier B.V. Polymer Embossing Tools for Rapid Prototyping of Plastic Microfluidic Devices

In this work, a new MEMS technology for hot embossing using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) tools is developed and characterized. The developed technology will permit low cost, simple, and rapid fabrication of disposable microfluidic biochips and plastic microstructures for numerous BioMEMS applications. For traditional planar systems, a negative photoepoxy (SU-8) or thick positive photoresist (AZ4...

Thermoplastic microfluidic devices for targeted chemical and biological applications

Combining photolithography and hot embossing offers the capability of cost-efficient and high-fidelity fabrication of polymer microfluidic devices, however, poor chemical resistance in nonpolar organic solvents and high gas permeability of the currently used polymers narrow the range of applications of the microfluidic devices. With the aim of specific chemical or biological applications, we re...

Enhancement of the thermo-mechanical properties of PDMS molds for the hot embossing of PMMA microfluidic devices

We present a cost-efficient and rapid prototyping technique for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microfluidic devices using a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based hot embossing process. Compared to conventional hot embossing methods, this technique uses PDMS molds with enhanced thermo-mechanical properties. To improve the replication performance, increases in both PDMS stiffness and hardness were ach...

PMMA Solution Assisted Room Temperature Bonding for PMMA–PC Hybrid Devices

Recently, thermoplastic polymers have become popular materials for microfluidic chips due to their easy fabrication and low cost. A polymer based microfluidic device can be formed in various fabrication techniques such as laser machining, injection molding, and hot embossing. A new bonding process presented in this paper uses a 2.5% (w/w) polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) solution as an adhesive l...

Polymer embossing tools for rapid prototyping of plastic microfluidic devices

In this paper, we describe a simple and rapid method of fabricating hot embossing tools using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), which are then used to rapidly fabricate microchannels in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). A negative photoepoxy SU-8 or thick positive photoresist AZ4620 on silicon was used for molding during PDMS casting. Fabrication time of these PDMS tools was considerably less than thos...
